We're proud to introduce our first guest blogger here at Hovey Lee Eco Jewelry, Megan Dougherty.

Megan Dougherty is the founder of Ecoutrement, a green haven for fashionistas looking to incorporate eco accessories into their wardrobe without giving up any glamour or class. Thanksgiving For All

In February this year we introduced a limited edition bracelet to benefit Project Angel Food, a local meals on wheels program that prepares and delivers 1,500 meals each day to children and people who are affected by serious illnesses. We had a goal of selling 100 bracelets by end of 2011 which will contribute approx 300 meals to the organization. Today we're grateful to report that over 80 bracelets have been sold. We need your help to acheive our goal, less than 20 bracelets left!

This is a call you can answer. We can’t justify people living with hunger. We must do all we can to change this. Read more about Project Angel Food and consider getting a bracelet for yourself or your loved ones. As we know especially around the time of Thanksgiving, we are blessed with abundancy and warmth from our family, lets not forget there are people who are not as fortunate and we have the ability to feed hundreds of individuals. All That Jazz!

I have been studying the old elegance of the Jazz Age for some time and waiting for the right moment to create our own interpretation around it. Recently luck brought us to some wonderful vintage Swarovski crystals greatly inspired us and we knew they would be perfect for the mini Jazz collection. Swarovski, the leading provider of high-quality crystals, had its boom time as the lust for opulence in the Jazz Age of the 1920s and 1930s was just being introduced. Swarovski worked closely with already big fashion names at the time - Balenciaga, Chanel and Schiaparelli, made crystals became an integral ingredient in fashion.

Crystals make jewelry dance, creating a dazzling light show unlike any other material. We have the challenge to use the uncommon shapes of the vintage crystals that many of us don't see everyday now: polygones, squares and retangles. We are very lucky to have the chance to rework these materials into new pieces. We hope you enjoy the romance and elegance of these modernized Jazz Age designs as much as we did while designing them.

From Then To Now

With the anniversary we celebrate this month, I wanted to extend a sincere and personal thank you to our customers and supporters who've been with us throughout the years! Six years ago when I left New York for San Francisco my day job let me telecommuting and I used the time saved to make jewelry, a long-time hobby of mine. I'd post pictures of my creations on my personal blog at the time, and friends were asking me to sell the pieces to them, and eventually I had to create a page to list them and that morphed into a web catalog. In October of 2005 I entered the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion which was a competition for emerging designers. I was very lucky to be selected winner in the jewelry category. That really made the turn for me and the line was officially launched.

I Heart Big Bear!

Over the anniversary weekend we took a trip to Big Bear, about 2.5 hours drive east of LA. Crisp air scented with the aroma of the pines, and the clear tranquil water of the lake set the scene for our first time visit. We took our skates and strolled along the water most part of the first day. Ahhh, so relaxing, this is what I'm here for, no better way to celebrate 6 years of hard work!!! ;-)

Next morning we took the Snow Summit chairlift up the mountain, a thrilling experience in itself, but definitely worth it! We enjoyed one of the most breathtaking views to be found anywhere.

So what have we been up to? Lots!! Over the past year or so we have sourced new materials, tried different production methods, worked with different manufacturers...and the results allow us to change the way we put out our collections। If you are a regular visitor of hoveylee।com, you'll notice we put out new pieces on a monthly basis, instead of seasonal basis in the past। That's a lot more jewelry than before, and we think our fans love that and buyers too! ;-) We also have been on Facebook almost everyday! As a child Hovey adored her mother's great sense of style and always loved the visits to tailors and jewelers. She was also enchanted by the eclectic designs and custom furniture her father, an interior designer, created for their home. Hovey has a degree in music as well as library science, but jewelry making has been apart of her life since her teenage years. With the constant encouragement and support from her friends and family, Hovey launched her own jewelry line in 2005 and instantly captured the attention of both the fashion and art communities. She was selected by Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion as the accessory designer that same year.

Hovey's collection is inspired by both design forms and by world cultures. She studies the essential design elements from different ethnic styles and fuses them with her California sensibility to create a stylish, interesting and fresh look.

inspired by hovey lee's humble achievement to change the way eco-friendly products are viewed, i cant help but think about all of the change i have noticed in my life and around it. so here i am, to write about it. oh and here is something for those of you who are about to read this. update your facebook status with a hope, dream or wish that you have, for your future, no one elses'. looking back over the past few years, the word change would be an understatement. i have loved and i have lost. i have cried, screamed, and fought- to only win and lose some. i have gained new friends and i have let go of old ones, and right now, is what is most important. never knowing exactly what the future holds, we all might have some idea as to where we are leading ourselves; if we continue what we are doing now it will have a direct influence on our futures. so the big question is, what are we doing?

we can all only speak for ourselves, but i really don't mind stating a view observations. for starters, we are doing less and complaining more. we are finding the better bargain and not what is best all around. we are substituting with artificial flavors and colors and light. we are finding the profit point for our company's opposed to the most profitable point for our consumers. we are listening to ipods and iphones and ichats and not listening to each other. our connections have become most recent updates on several social network sites. we would rather send people instant messages and mixed signals than to be ourselves and show who we are, for real, in person, flaws included; sorry no photoshop. i believe for many its become a disguise, a lucid dream, a mask to cover and sweep under the rug the realness. and for me, i cant help but step back. living in a treehouse cottage helps me with that. but it also helps. and so here i am talking about change. be inspired by the little things and the little people in your life.

One thing I love most about southern California are the fantastic farmers markets. A tented parking lot never

This past year has filled all of us with memories. It is all of our joys, griefs, good times and bad times, that has brought us into this moment for another year, another beginning. Yes, many things might stay the same or dramatic changes will be in store for us, yet one thing will definately remain. We all share in this search for happiness, peace, and fullfilment. More importantly, as some of us might think we have reached all of our goals, it simply cannot be true. Life does not have a finish line. Many of us do believe that death is or isn't that finish line, but we can all make sure we do completely live until that moment comes when we are we are facing it.

I feel that 2009 has not been easy for many of us and that is okay, because a new year does give us some hope and of course, opportunity.

And so, a few last words to share that have meant so much to me this year:

Well I know they say its 24 days of Christmas.

so..

THE 24 things I LOVE MOST.

(and in no particular order)

1. Tyler, my brother: who inspires me every day and I without doubt couldn't live without.

2. Luc, otis & lola : my laughter stems from their souls. My most loyal companions that I have yet to love thus far.

3.the teachers I have had in my life: and I meet new ones every day.
4.the way the day looks once rain is over: the wind on my nose.
5. The few friends that continue to support me: and consistantly surprise me in their unconditional love for me as family. you know who you are.
6. A crescent moon: it's quite beautiful.
7. The way words can flow like the grand canyon: rivers and waves of emotion; unkept.

8. My best friend and her children: because they have become a part of me.

9. Butterflies in your stomache: we never really know what will happen next.
10. Girlfriends and memories: because childhood will never fully leave any of us.

For me, this time of year means a variety of things. Above all of those things is family, which for me, includes my best friend Logan. That being said, it goes to show that family does not always mean they are a brother, sister, father, cousin or mother. I feel that you might now always need a holiday to find a reason to show your love and appreciation towards your loved ones, however it is a very good place to start!

When I was growing up, Thanksgiving with my family was very special. My mom slaved in the kitchen for hours and hours on end. The smell of her candied yams and baked brie always drew me out of my room and down into the coziness of my brothers' castles made out of our couch pillows, the hazelnut coffee brewing, pumpkin pies baking at 375 degrees and my father scrambling to keep all of us giving our mother a helping hand.

My mother and I never could wait for the pumpkin pies to dip our fingers into the cool whip, treating ourselves to the delicious whipped heaven. I would get caught dipping my head in the freezer and it's not because I didn't know how to handle the heat in the kitchen. Instead, it was my favorite way to eat that cool whip that I craved all year long. To this day, it is still my favorite way to eat it.

As I got older, I found a love to be behind the camera, so I was in charge of capturing the moments on my camera and the family video camera. My brothers and I loved finding new ways to annoy my father and I think he secretly enjoyed the attention from us. Now, we all still make sure to give thanks to each other, to ensure we toast to another year of love, support, health and laughter.

And so, until next year, don't wait to give thanks to your loved ones for without them, we would fall short as individuals, lose pride in the idea of teamwork, possibly lose touch with where we came from, and more so, give up the opportunity to find happiness in someone's joy.

What are the hot acessories for this fall?
I’ve incorporated a number of victorian inspired charms, vintage and heirloom pieces in my collection this fall. I was going for a sort of period look; minimal use of colors, hip but not trendy. The baseline principle is to work with quality, sustainable materials like reclaimed metals, and not waste anything in the process.

How should we wear these trends?
Individualism is important. What you wear, especially jewelry, should reflect your personal taste and not a trend. View jewelry as a gift, whether a gift from someone or for yourself, and a trend becomes irrelevant.

Abigail Lavine, co-founder of 8-Track Heaven, died on April 1, 1997 at 11:07 a.m. Abbey had been seriously ill since being diagnosed with cancer. She received the best in care during her last months from her husband Scott and died quietly at home.

Some answers from the artist behind "sonic fabric"...

Sonic fabric emits sound when you run a tape head (the little thingy inside thetape deck that touches the tape) over it. Because the tape retains its magneticquality through the weaving process, it acts as a big wide band of tape.

I had no idea when I first conceived of this project that the fabric would be"listenable"... the point for me was just to get as many of my all-time favorite sounds onto the recording. So I made a collage of layered samples from my collection using ananalog 4-track recorder.

When you run the tape head over the fabric you are reading 4 or 5 strands of tape at once ... in other words, 16 or 20 tracks all mixed together. It sounds kind of like scratching a record backwards or radio static.

In order for the sounds to be perfectly audible, though, the head would have to be swiped across the fabric at the same speed itwas recorded at. So it's a challenge to make that happen.

To me it's the concept that makes it meaningful ... all those sounds mixed together to form a totally unique new sound. Things I've collected throughout my whole life. Music and sounds that had agreat influence on me ... everything from my high-school punk band, Jack Kerouac,ocean surf, shamanic medicine songs recorded in the Peruvian jungle, ambient citystreet noise, the improvisational/experimental ensembles of myself and my friends,the Beatles (especially Revolution #9 ... my earliest influence), and Pachelbel'scanon in D (my earliest musical memory)

On my father's boat (a 19' Lightning class sailboat) his tell-tailof choice was made from a small strand of cassette tape because it's a light,wind-sensitive, and durable material. When I was a kid I used to imagine that Icould hear Cat Stevens or Beethoven's 6th or whatever had been recorded ontothe tape wafting out into the air if the wind hit the tell-tail just the right way.Years later, I learned about Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags.

These limited-edition ties are made in collaboration with designer Julio Cesar.

As our society collectively awakens to the realization that it must devise ways to stem the hemorrhaging caused by years of denial and excess, and as the DIY (do-it-yourself) movement becomes proportionally more popular, I am constantly reminded of Joseph Beuys’ words “Everyone Is An Artist”.

Beuys believed strongly, not that everyone should make (so-called) fine art, but that everyone can live a richer and more meaningful life by infusing any vocation or action with his or her own personal creativity. Beuys believed that personal creativity could be cultivated and honed by reconnecting with nature, and by developing a more intimate relationship with it.

He believed that individuals, as well as our entire culture could be healed by returning to a simpler way of life, and by becoming more attuned to the subtle, ineffable forces of the ecosystem we inhabit

Some call one who consciously connects to, communicates with, and elaborates on the intangible a shaman. Some called Joseph Beuys that. Most just called him an artist. In this sense, everyone is a shaman as well. And as people begin to seek ways to “do it themselves” they are exercising a form of personal creativity that has been largely neglected in our culture for far too long.

A basic fact of existence that has been all but forgotten is that human happiness and the sense of freedom (the pursuits of which are among our so-called inalienable rights) depend largely on the ability to express personal creativity.

John T Unger- Bottle caps have long had a place in the folk art tradition as a decorative element. Usually, they are deployed more as a texture, willy nilly without sorting for color. His bottle cap mosaics were initially inspired by Haitian ritual flags, in which detailed images are realized entirely through the use of sequins. The first bottle cap pieces he did combined bottle caps with vitreous glass tile.

Each cap is sorted by brand or color, washed, dried, punched, partially crimped and finally nailed in overlapping scales to create a feeling of depth, light and shadow. Decorative nail heads emulate the texture of seed beads often used to reinforce the sequins on flags. Even the smaller fish require hundreds of caps to complete.
The most amazing thing about these fish is the way they interact with light. When you look at one or two caps from any brand, they're generally not all that impressive. But when you group hundreds of them together and let them catch the sunlight, they truly glow. The combination of the background color with the logo can create color tones that are vibrant and lively and wholly unexpected. More of his work can be found at:www.johntunger.com

Dryads Dancing began with picture frames made with reclaimed wood. Antique bead board, reclaimed molding and ceiling tin made into picture frames was the launching pad for the company. We have been committed to using salvaged materials from the beginning for several reasons.

Contemporary furniture is the newest addition to the dryads line. Beautiful reclaimed wood with the authentic paint to create the patched together surfaces. The plane the wood down so it is smooth and then add a coat or two of heavy matte lacquer. The welded steel frame makes the furniture very strong and durable. The Edible Schoolyard (ESY), established in 1995, is a one-acre garden and kitchen classroom at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, California. It is a program of the Chez Panisse Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by chef and author Alice Waters.

The garden started as a cover crop in a vacant lot with once-monthly student participation. More than a decade later, it is a thriving acre of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. Now, each student at King Middle School attends 12 to 30 sessions in ESY kitchen and garden classrooms, depending on grade level. ESY reaches each of the nearly one thousand students at King Middle School.*

Mission & Goals

The mission of the Edible Schoolyard is to create and sustain an organic garden and landscape that is wholly integrated into the school’s curriculum, culture and food program.

ESY involves students in all aspects of farming the garden and preparing, serving and eating food as a means of awakening their senses and encouraging awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of nourishment, community and stewardship of the land.

Students leave the Edible Schoolyard with:

A sense of ownership and accomplishment.
A sense of curiosity and wonder.
A sense of place.

I do not know what it is about summer, but something about the warm breezes at night and a steadiness in the air that makes me feel at peace within myself. Sometimes, I sit outside on my apartment patio and get dizzy thinking that I am sitting in my "dream" house, out on the deck, over looking a mossy and moonlit lake. The breeze is coming from an old weeping willow tree in out and to the left. The frogs sing in perfect harmony and the dragonflies flicker about. Sunnyside opens on a winter day in 1916 with the roaring 1920's approaching and so, according to an endnote, “[O]n November 12, 1916, Charlie Chaplin was indeed the subject of mass hysteria in which he was spotted across the country,”. I will also add that this book doesn't necessarily have a plot but does follow Mr. Chaplin through the several mass hysterias that came through times we know of as when when "the Great War" was not the name of a book and when tragedies went from theater to black white film. If the reader reads close enough, there is plenty of history in this book.

Overjoyed and Under a Spell

One night, a girl traveled to an ocean shore nearby. She was with a boy and they both were overjoyed. Overwhelmed and under a spell, they felt like a moonlit swim in the ocean was the only cure. Before dawn breaks, they abandon their quiet, cave-like and newfound home to head inward. Suddenly, this girl realizes she left behind her rings, her gem stones, these things she felt naked without. And so, upon daybreak, she set out to search for the rings she left behind.
With all hope that they would still be there,
among the people that have set up their umbrellas
and boogie boards
and among all the children playing by the sea,
there, upon the rock she left them,
were her rings.
She felt as if she had lost herself, and found herself that moment.
The gems, the stones, the memories captured
within those pieces of jewelry,
were also pieces of her,
lost and then found again.

Summer has begun, schools are out and I am looking back on my years through school. My dear friend Christopher, just graduated from UCSB and I couldn't resist giving him a copy of a book, that has over time, definitely become more than just a book. For me, Dr. Seuss' "Oh, The Places You'll Go" has become a story that is the blanket under some major milestones we approach throughout our lives. During our school years we are so young, and when it's time for the graduations from high school and college, they do seem like such an accomplishment. So, right now, I can remember it as if it was yesterday. However I also remember every thing, amazing in the good and the worst ways, that have become the years post-school. For many graduates right now, I am sure they are looking into what the future has to bring them, and they might also realize there are no more classes and there are no more people in the halls to pass. So to all the graduates of 2009 out there I do want to say:

Onward and Upward.
Have the courage to stay true to yourself.
Have the confidence in your heart to know what you want.
When obstacles come, and trust me when I say,
They really do come in threes,
Have the fight in you enough to stick with it.
If it was easy, it wouldn't be any fun.
Have the drive and conviction to follow through.
Find yourself by shaking out of your comfort blanket
And stepping out into something new.
Don't get lost out there.
Live as how you want to be remembered.
Never drift too far and become a tumbling tumbleweed,
Amidst a very big desert.
Oh, and don't forget,
If things do go terribly, horribly, miserably sour,
You can always write a book about it .

I wonder, how many other people in the world have thought about sitting there, sitting anywhere, staring up at the moon, and wondering who else is looking at the moon that same very second. I have and surely more than once. At one point in history, the moon was one of the biggest media monkey-makers of all time.

The moment we actually walked that walk, after talking about it for so long, man not only took a step, but a right of passage.

We had reached a milestone.

So what does the moon mean to us now? To me, the moon means connection, soul, and tremendous energy. I can't ever forget the time I camped at the beach with my family when we were younger. What I remember best, was that moment I fell asleep next to the ocean and never once felt scared. I fell asleep peacefully and almost felt the moon lighting up my insides, beating and breathing, in and out.
